Russell Nakaishi, M.S. has been the Veteran Service Officer at the Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB) since 2005 and has been faithfully assisting returning veterans with their VA benefits needs. He is one of the first AMVETS Service Officers to be assigned to a National Guard military installation, fulfilling the agreement between AMVETS and the National Guard Bureau to expand outreach support to National Guard Service Members and their families.
Since 2005, he has assisted returning veterans, still in the National Guard and Reserves, to access their VA benefits. Among his accomplishments include conducting numerous briefings for drilling Reservists and Guardsmen, providing assistance, in conjunction with the VA at the military Post Deployment Health Re-assessments to complete claims, providing claims assistance to veteran students at local universities and colleges, collaborating with the National Guard and Reserve Family Assistance and Employer Support offices to support veterans, consulting local legislators and government officials on veteran services at the Joint Forces Training Base, supporting the Team AMVETS Operation Welcome Home program at the base, collaborating with the Workforce Investment Act/One Stop Centers to refer veterans in need of employment, and providing claims assistance to unemployed veterans in support of CA EDD Veteran Employment programs.
“I take pride in my support of the returning veterans from the current war and all wars, bringing access to the services to them”, said Russell Nakaishi, when asked about how he feels about what he does. He has been received compliments and acknowledgements from the Secretary of the CA Department of Veteran Affairs, MG Peter Gravett (Ret), the Office of Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, and Assemblyman Lou Correa, various units of the California National Guard and US Army Reserve, and California State University, Fullerton Veteran Service Office. Through his close collaboration with the VA while at the Joint Forces Training Base, he receives referrals from the VHA Patient Business Office and OIF Clinic in Long Beach, CA EDD Offices in Santa Ana and Garden Grove, as well as veterans from other service organizations.
What makes Russell stand out among his peers? His willingness to be of service to the veteran, the professional way he does his job and his patience, according to Les Shobe, retired USAF Officer and disabled veteran. In fact, that is what many of the veterans he has assisted have said about Russell. Many veterans have said they prefer to see him at the Joint Forces Training Base than go to other service offices. Its also the location. The AMVETS office at the Joint Forces Training Base is the only Team AMVETS service office in Orange County. The Veteran Services Center at the JFTB, where Russell is posted, offers a comprehensive array of services to assist the veteran, including VA benefits, employment, family services and community services referrals.
